SELL-EBRATION 2013

Hi, Everyone!

This is a great time of year to get out and meet our neighbors, while holding a positive event in our area!

I hope everyone will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!

It's always a good idea to find a new home for our unwanted items, as we don't want to see useful things filling our landfill. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle is the mantra in our home, and having a fun yard sale is a terrific way to make a few dollars while helping someone discover and repurpose our hidden treasures!

I also hope that by holding our event at the same time as Maplewood's, we can help them to get more people to attend their sales, as well as ours.

Cooperation is a wonderful thing... and no one does it better than Rochester's NW area residents!

Have a great week!
~ Pamela Davis, LONA PR

PS - If you do choose to hold a sale, please feel free to post your street on LONA's facebook page in the comments section of the flyer/picture https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=478504215574168&set=a.237617859662806.55545.227243050700287&type=1&theater .
That way, the buying public will be able to plan their shopping route right to your sale! :)

The Summer Sunday Sundae Storytime has begun!

I've placed a pink plastic tote on my porch, and filled it (and refilled it) with reading books of various grade levels and interests, as well as coloring books and crayons that the children are welcome to use at any time. (However, I'm discovering that crayons will melt easily in the sun when placed in this tote, so I have been giving the kids bags of crayons for them to keep indoors, to use on the coloring books at their leisure.)

Our storytimes are not relegated to only happen on Sundays. We've been known to get together for a quick bedtime story on more than one occasion, but I let the children know that we must get inside when the street lights come on... or when the mosquitoes are finding us too tasty! Ouch!

I encourage the children to share the books with each other, or to add them to their own bedroom book collections at home.
They do not have to return the books.
It is important that they learn to appreciate the incredible and wonderful value of books, and of learning, early on.
The amazing skill of reading, which needs to be practiced daily, is their passport to a successful future!
These two photos are a very, very, very small representation
of the books that we are reading this summer.
I've also given the children a fun coloring placemat that has games and puzzles that they can fill-in with crayons, and then wipe the mat clean with a paper napkin, so they can play again and again!
I'll be happy to post some of the beautiful photos of the children reading, but only after getting their parents' permission!
This photo shows how great these children are, and how they work well together!

This Storytime Porch is zoned for
Peace, Respect, and Kindness!

I am also encouraging the children to get plenty of exercise!
I've supplied jump ropes, hula hoops, and sidewalk chalk to create hopscotch boards. The kids really know how to have fun in the sun!

*~*~*~*~*
Children can earn a FREE BOOK from Barnes & Noble simply by reading 8 books over this summer! I'm so glad the bookstore is at The Mall at Greece Ridge, right on the bus line! I hope every single child gets a ride there to collect their book by September 4th, 2012 (the last day to bring the completed reading journal into the store)!

*~*~*~*~*
It's easy to participate in the
RCSD's Summer RocRead Program!
Your child will earn a free book,
as well as other nice prizes!
The books you read for the "Earn a FREE BOOK" Barnes & Noble program also count towards the Rochester Public Library's Summer Reading and the Summer RocRead programs as well!!!
Plus, the BEST REWARD will be your child's improved reading skills,
as that will make it easier to learn in school... which will brighten your child's future!

Print out and turn in this form at the Red Wings game on August 16th. If you turn it in at the game, you will get two (2) free tickets to the game and a book! (That is so cool!)

This brochure has some good info, and I wanted to share it!

Our New Signs!

These new signs look GREAT!

They really help to foster a patriotic unity for all of our wonderful and varied ethnic backgrounds, as in "The Great American Melting Pot" from the Schoolhouse Rock days! The messages on the signs are revered across all of our heritages, and help to teach our children these common values on a daily basis.

"Thank You" to the Rochester Area Community Foundation's NeighborGood Grant!

The neighbors have had positive comments, and really like them!

I hope more folks will be inspired to get involved, and help make our street, and area, even better! :)

"Text-A-Tip" - Rochester police can now get crime tips via TEXT

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20100722/NEWS01/100722016/Rochester-police-can-now-get-crime-tips-via-text
Staff reports • July 22, 2010

Rochester-area residents can now text crime tips to the Rochester Police Department.

Rochester Police Sgt. Gary Moxley today announced a new program where anyone can anonymously text a crime tip to city police officers. Tipsters are not required to leave his or her name in a message. Officers said they will not attempt to identify the owner of the cell number.

Send tips to 274637, which spells “crimes,” then type “TIP 177” at the start of the message, and then type your tip.

For those who prefer to share information on the phone, call CrimeStoppers at (585) 423-9300.

Reporting Drug Activity

Reporting Drug Activity

Drug activity is devastating to neighborhoods. Because neighbors often have information that would be impossible for police to gather, their knowldege of local activity is crucial to fighting drug activity. The first thing that neighbors must remember is to keep themselves safe and hidden from observation.

What to watch for:
  • A large amount of foot traffic
  • Vehicles and pedestrians visiting a property for short periods of time
  • Glassine/plastic baggies found near the suspected location
  • Used needles in the area.

What information to get: (keep a pad, and log the date and time of the activity)

  • License plate numbers from the vehicles visiting the suspect location
  • Descriptions of persons suspected of selling drugs
  • When are the busiest times at the location.
  • The type of drugs being sold - marijuana, cocaine, crack, etc.
  • Where it is being sold from - ie: porch, side door, window, etc.

How to report drug activity:

If a drug sale is occurring as you watch, call 911 and ask for an immediate police response.

If you have gathered intelligence information as described above, please call 311 to report the activity (outside city limits call (585) 428-5990)

Please keep in mind that you may not get an immediate response. Police must investigate and accumulate enough evidence to take action.
